Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Treatment

carpal tunnel syndromeWhat other diseases can be mistaken for this syndrome?

Although often the diagnosis of this disease is relatively simple, sometimes the doctor will need to establish the so-called differential diagnosis with other diseases, such as other neurological entrapment of nerves, abnormal cervical nerve roots, some brain disorders deficit transient blood flow or the so-called overuse syndrome, which affects manual workers.

How often is this disease?

If symptoms of intermittent or mild to moderate, initial treatment is always conservative:- Avoid activities that trigger or increase the symptoms.

- Treat underlying disease if there is (diabetes, hypothyroidism, fractures, etc.)..

- Use splints for immobilizing the wrist in neutral position.

- Taking certain medications such as NSAIDs or diuretics have demonstrated some utility.

- Perform steroid and anesthetic injections in the wrist.

If more severe symptoms or if the initial medical treatment fails, we must resort to surgery by surgical release of the median nerve by cutting the overlying annular ligament, which often provides permanent relief. The results are very good if the surgeon is experienced in this type of intervention.
