Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
What is it?
The carpal tunnel syndrome is a neurological condition due to compression of the median nerve calling it passes through the wrist-hand path. This nerve arises or originates in the cervical spinal cord and travels across the upper extremity to provide strength and sensitivity to the muscles of the forearm and fingers. It is a very common health problem that affects between one and five per thousand.
What are its causes?
In most cases the cause is unknown and say that it is of idiopathic origin. Other times, however, we know that is caused by various conditions, systemic diseases and local processes, among which its frequency pregnancy, diabetes mellitus, rheumatoid arthritis, hypothyroidism, obesity and trauma. This disease is more prevalent in women between 30 and 60 years and manual workers such as butchers, musicians, etc..How and why there is this syndrome?
The wrist is made up of different bones and ligaments which pass the tendons of the forearm muscles to attach to various structures of the hand. This determines that, under normal conditions, called the carpal tunnel canal or a structure is indeed close to the tendons that pass a somewhat tight. The disease can occur when you decrease the ability of the carpal tunnel injury or inflammation of surrounding tissues, or when there is an increase volume of their contents, as in cases of inflammation of the tendons that pass through it. It is characteristic of the median nerve compression by the so-called annular ligament of the carpus, on which often have to act as we shall see.
