Exercise to Fight Alzheimer (I)

exercise to fight alzheimer

Scientific evidence shows that physical activity is consistent not only welcomed by muscles and circulatory system, but also activates the nervous system and even promotes neuronal regeneration.

On many occasions, the sports world becomes a mirror of the difficulties faced by humans and how to overcome them. Thus, a very famous baseball player who has fallen into drug addiction will be admired after overcoming the trance, like a footballer who has had the courage and determination to overcome injury or illness.

Serve the introduction to say that people who play sports most of his life living much better than the others, because they benefit not only muscles, circulatory system and oxygen to the brain, but because the regular physical activity stimulates the appearance of substances in turn, promote the establishment and functioning of neurotransmitters (chemicals that transmit information from one neuron to another) and intervene directly in the creation of new cells in the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord), which until recently was believed impossible.

Surely it was hard to remember any athlete who has had Alzheimer’s notorious (illness that causes gradual loss of memory), and it is no coincidence, since several studies conclude that those who exercise regularly have a barrier that protects them from this disorder. Even when, despite all surprised the athlete’s condition, cerebral atrophy is less experienced than the rest of the patients.

One of the most serious research in this regard was conducted by a team of scientists led by Dr. Jeffrey M. Burns, University of Kansas (USA), same as enlisted the help of 121 people over 60 years. In this universe, 57 individuals with Alzheimer’s early stages, while the rest had no type of dementia (a disease that reduces brain function).

Participants in the survey had exercised on a treadmill to test cardiovascular function (measured oxygen consumed during activity) and underwent a CT (imaging test) to assess brain volume.

The experts concluded that “people in the early stages of Alzheimer’s who were less fit had four times more brain damage in any form or participants without dementia.” In other words, individuals with early Alzheimer preserve their brain function for longer, provided they exercise regularly.

“The evidence shows that smaller brain volume is linked to worse cognition, so to preserve this status through the exercise could result in better cognitive abilities,” the final report.
