The responsibilities of the patient
As a member of the group in charge of your care, you must do the following:
- Monitor your overall health status and report to physician any changes.
- Report any change in their symptoms.
- Take your medications as directed and report any side effects.
- Follow the recommendations of specialists in exercise and report when they have difficulty doing any activity or exercise.
- Follow the recommendations for feeding (diet).
- Report to the doctor when you have sudden changes in weight.
The responsibilities of the family
The family can help the patient to follow the recommendations to control and monitor their condition. They also need to know and help the doctor to report changes in symptoms or new symptoms. This is especially important if you do not speak English and someone in your family to help in their conversations with doctors and nurses.
- Calling the doctor or another specialist, your family should:
- Indicate that you are being treated for heart failure.
- Describe your symptoms.
- Describe what has been done to provide relief.
- Give the names and dosages of medications you are taking.
The future
Talk to your doctor about the way in which heart failure affect your life. Many patients learn to enjoy life despite the limitations imposed by the suffering of this condition.
Although it is rare that the patient has sudden changes in your symptoms, there are certain activities that can no longer do because they are tired or short of breath (air). If you notice a sudden change in your symptoms, it is important to report to doctor immediately.
