Heart Valve Surgery
When there valve problems, it may be necessary to repair or replace one or more heart valves. This type of surgery is quite common and is effective in most cases.
Coronary bypass surgery and angioplasty
Coronary bypass surgery is major surgery. During this operation uses pieces (grafts) of other veins or arteries of the body to create a “bridge” of passage for blood to irrigate the heart muscle. The surgery corrects blockages in the arteries that supply blood to the heart, like any other muscle, needs oxygen to function and pump blood.
Angioplasty is an alternative to coronary bypass surgery (“percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty”). During this procedure, a catheter (thin tube) through an artery to the heart. On reaching the area of blockage, a balloon is inflated at the tip of the catheter. The balloon expands the coronary artery and, when removed, allows for better blood circulation.
Recent scientific research indicates that coronary bypass surgery can help patients who have deteriorated and have heart failure and angina pectoris caused by coronary heart disease. However, even unproven long-term benefits of the use of angioplasty.
After undergoing surgery, the patient must follow a careful program to monitor and control his heart condition.
