Who may apply?

Cervical cancer is caused by some of the human papillomavirus (HPV), and is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women. Until some years ago there were no medicines to prevent it, but recently it has developed a vaccine for this purpose.

The vaccine against HPV and cervical cancer, protects against four types of HPV, the main agents of disease, existing between forty-two that are the cause of cervical cancer and two that cause genital warts . That is, the vaccine is very effective but does not provide total protection.

Still, not all women can benefit from the vaccine against cervical cancer, because it shows effectiveness only when applied in very young girls or women, 11 to 26 years of age. The younger the patient has, the more you benefit, but if you’ve been infected by some type of HPV will not be protected against it.

Ideally, the vaccine is received before the first sexual contact: It is recommended for girls from age 11, but in some cases can be received from 9. In these cases the vaccine can prevent almost 100% of disease caused by four HPV types for which it is developed.

The vaccine against cervical cancer, which is given in three doses, not recommended for pregnant women allergic to yeast or other vaccine components. Neither should be vaccinated women who have had reactions to previous doses of the vaccine.
