An ingredient of ice cream could protect against AIDS
Researchers at the University of Minnesota indicated that the compound called glycerol monolaurate, could be used to combat HIV infection in humans.
The compound has already been successfully tested in five monkeys and the scientists suggested that although his investigation is in preliminary stages, the ingredients may be added to lubricants than women used to fight HIV infection.
“It would be a different way to tackle the problem of prevention,” said Ashley Haase, director from the Department of Microbiology at the University of Minnesota, in a conversation with reporters. Read the rest of this entry »
Influenza vaccine: one dose will protect people
Representatives of the American Health, told the Reuters news agency that according to tests performed in the United States with the H1N1 influenza vaccine from Sanofi-Pasteur SA and CSL Ltd., only one dose is needed to protect people of the disease.
“I am pleased to tell you that the initial results of tests sponsored by the NIH (National Institute of Health) corroborate and reinforce the findings from the companies,” said Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
In a press conference, Fauci added that the immune response was swift and that people appear to be protected 8 to 10 days after being vaccinated. Read the rest of this entry »
Influenza virus causes more lung damage than traditional
The influenza virus responsible for causing the current pandemic in animal models more lung damage than the traditional flu.
This does not, however, be sensitive to treatment with existing antiviral drugs, according to a study published in the journal Nature.
Kawoaka Yoshihiro and his team at the University of Wisconsin, Madison (USA), took virus strains extracted from patients affected by the disease and its morbidity studied in four animal models. Read the rest of this entry »

Disinfect their targets and avoid a cold
In cold and flu season, should do a little extra effort to prevent germs and bacteria that cause diseases, spread through the house and affect members of his family. One of the most simple and easy to do that is keeping clean their targets.
Although often you wash your sheets is obviously a personal decision, there are scientific arguments that point to wash the bedding once a week is good for health. According to ehow.com and examiner.com, wash your sheets once a week (in hot water at a temperature of 54 degrees or more) means getting rid of dead cells (the perfect food for bacteria) and mites allergy-causing dust and accumulate every night to sleep. If you or someone in your family is prone to sweat, or if your pet sleeps on the bed, wash your sheets every two days, rinse the dirt and leaves your pet scaling. Biosensor detects HIV infection in less than an hour

Researchers at the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) and Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona (UAB) have developed a type of biosensor that detects infection with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, in less than an hour.
The new method, based on a genetically modified enzyme and a small network of microelectrodes, is especially useful in geographic areas with insufficient medical resources, as it “represents a viable and effective alternative to conventional systems, which require more expensive infrastructure and complex, “the CSIC.
Already the subject of a patent application, this technique combines the latest advances in genetics and micro-electronics and is a step forward in the development of methods for detection of HIV “rapid, portable and low cost.”
“By working with microelectrodes, the sample volume necessary to make the analysis can be reduced to about microliters (millionth of a liter), which increases security analyst and facilitates subsequent removal of debris generated,” says CSIC researcher Francisco Javier del Campo, referring to the additional advantages of biosensor. “The sensor is especially suitable for field trials with many samples, and that can be performed with portable equipment by unqualified personnel,” he stresses, in turn, Antonio Pedro Villaverde, Department of Genetics and Microbiology at the UAB.
In addition, the use of allosteric enzymes, which are changing its enzymatic activity in the presence of certain substances with which they interact, as used in this biosensor, opens new opportunities for detection of viral infections and clinical veterinary interest, as FMD, swine fever and hepatitis B and C, the researchers said.
The biosensor based performance in a genetically modified enzyme, in combination with a network of microelectrodes that detect electrochemically the products of this enzyme. In the presence of anti-HIV antibodies, enzyme activity is triggered, allowing easy discrimination of the infected samples that are not within an hour, a time that the researchers expected to shorten in the future by improving the design of microelectrodes, CSIC said.
